Baker and Tribal Council extended a warm welcome to the Colorado American Indian Affairs Interim Study Committee and staff as they visited the Reservation this morning. The committee held an off-site meeting at the Growth Fund building, followed by informative tours of the Tribal Court, Southern Ute Indian Montessori Academy, SunUte Community Center, and the Pine River Indian Irrigation Project. Tribal Council expressed appreciation for the Committee’s dedication to addressing critical issues impacting the two Ute Tribes. Tribal Council highlighted the importance of legislative support in several key areas, including: Reservation-wide exclusions: Each legislative session, the Tribe must work with legislators on exclusions from proposed bills that apply to the entire State. Baker, Chairman – 970.563.2320 Summer Begay, Communication Specialist– 970.563.2313 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JULY 23, 2024 Southern Ute Economic Development Launches New Event & Business Workshop Series to Support Local Entrepreneurs Southern Ute Indian Reservation – The Southern Ute Indian Tribe is pleased to announce the launch of the new Píinu Núuchi Farmers Market & Outdoor Biz Lab, starting July 26, 2024, at the parking lot in front of KSUT Radio Station. The Farmers Market will be every Friday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm through October 11, 2024.  Vendors are required to be present during the market core hours of 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. The 12-week event and business workshop series, led by the Tribe’s Economic Development Department will serve as a small business incubator, providing local agriculture producers, artisans, and other entrepreneurs with an accessible marketplace and support through various workshops hosted during the market. Baker, Chairman – 970.563.2320 Summer Begay, Communication Specialist– 970.563.2313   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 9, 2024   Southern Ute Indian Tribe Takes Legal Action to Receive Fair Treatment by State   After Four Years of Being Stonewalled, Tribal Lawsuit Works to Ensure State Honors its Compact and Offer Equal Access to Economic Opportunities Southern Ute Indian Reservation –– At the American Indian Affairs Interim Study Committee’s inaugural meeting, Chairman Melvin J. Baker of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe announced that the Tribe has filed a lawsuit against the State of Colorado to ensure fair access to economic opportunities voted into law by Colorado voters in 2019. The Southern Ute Indian and Ute Mountain Ute Tribes have been unfairly blocked by the Colorado Department of Revenue from engaging in online sports betting, despite longstanding State-Tribal Compacts explicitly allowing them to do so. Baker, Tribal Council, and Executive Officer Lindsay J. Box are delighted to welcome Dr. Joseph Claunch as the new Director of the Department of Education, effective today, July 1, 2024. “Dr. Claunch’s dedication to fostering academic success and cultural identity within Native American communities is truly inspiring,” said Chairman Baker.  “His extensive experience in education leadership, combined with his passion for serving Indigenous youth, makes him an ideal fit to lead our Department of Education.
