Welcome to the Southern Ute Optometry Clinic. We strive to provide Comprehensive Optometric Care to the community and surrounding areas. Our goal is to create an experience that exceeds your expectation. We accomplish that through outstanding customer service provided by highly qualified staff. When a patient visits our office, the goal of each member of our team is to provide exceptional care in a safe, comfortable atmosphere.

We want to be your choice when you choose Optometric Care.

The Southern Ute Optometrist sees patients on Monday and Wednesday from 8:00am – 4:30pm only, however the Optician is available Monday through Friday from 8:00am – 4:30pm to schedule appointments, provide contact lens training, eyeglass dispensing, minor repairs and adjustments and frame styling.

Optometry Staff

Jon Zissman, OD – Optometrist

Dr. Jon Zissman has been working with the Southern Ute tribal health since 2011 as the staff Optometrist. Dr. Zissman did his undergraduate studies at Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff, Arizona. He received his Doctor of Optometry in 2006 from Pacific University’s College of Optometry. Shortly after graduation, Dr. Zissman and his family continue to live in Pagosa Springs. He enjoys spending time with his family, enjoying the outdoors, reading and playing sports.

Sharon Bean – Optometric Assistant

Sharon Bean is an Optician and brings several years of optical experience. She moved to Colorado from Los Alamos, New Mexico after meeting her husband in 2008, Sharon enjoys spending time with her family, going to concerts, traveling and cheering for the Seattle Seahawks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need an eye exam?

Routine exams for most people should be done once a year.

Patients with diagnoses of diabetes or hypertension or those that are on certain medications for rheumatoid arthritis should be seen once a year for a dilated eye exam.

What do I do if I have an eye emergency?

Eye emergencies are taken as a priority when the Doctor is in the clinic. When the doctor is not in clinic, we will refer you to the health center who in turn will make a referral to the ER if appropriate.
