To apply for a Land Assignment or Lease Request, eligible tribal member applicants must submit an Application for Assignment of Tribal Lands and Homesite Development Plan along with a drawing card containing their name, address, and contact information (including phone number and email). The Lands Division will review the submitted applications, homesite development plans, and drawing cards to ensure only eligible Tribal members’ names are placed in the drawing. Those interested can mail, email, or deliver in person your submission to the Department of Natural Resources – Lands Division at PO Box 737, Ignacio, CO 81137, or contact us via email at sluzar@southernute-nsn.gov or via phone at 970-563-0126. The Department of Natural Resources has also received an application from Ms. Nalani Thompson for an assignment on tribal lands. The land she has applied for is a relinquishment of a homesite assignment from a non-immediate family member. The White House rescinded this action this morning. No official explanation has been given for the OMB’s decision to withdraw the memo. The Tribe had proactively contacted the offices of Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet as well the Office of the Attorney General for the State of Colorado. In addition, Tribal Council met with Representative Jeff Hurd on this matter to express concerns and gather clarification while highlighting the need for the continuation of the federal funding. “The federal government has a solemn obligation to honor its trust responsibility and financial commitments. The clinic will take place March 24-28, 2025. The Tribal Wills Clinic is a group of volunteers including law students and licensed attorneys, who donate their time to help Tribal Members write wills. Administration Community Culture Health Tribal Members Uncategorized Veterans The Southern Ute Wildlife Division’s Big Game Survey underway January 15, 2025 by abarry The week of January 13 – 17, 2025 the Wildlife Division will be conducting its annual aerial big game survey across the Southern Ute Reservation. If you are out in the field during the week you can expect to see a helicopter flying at low elevation during day light hours across trust lands on both the east and west sides of the reservation. The Wildlife Division conducts this annual census of mule deer, elk and other wildlife to gauge population trends and herd health. Burch, announces the return of the Annual Walk/Run on December 10, 2024 December 4, 2024 by abarry The family of the late Chairman Leonard C. Burch would like to share historical information on how Leonard C. Burch Day was created and how he continues to be honored each year as the leading trailblazer of the Southern Ute people for our new generation of tribal members and for tribal staff who may come on board within a Southern Ute tribal entity recently. This day of recognition was first established on Dec. 10, 1996, by the Southern Ute Indian Tribal Council and is celebrated as a tribal holiday — every December by the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, La Plata County and the State of Colorado. LaPlata County leadership and the State of Colorado followed suit in 2020, by formally acknowledging December 10th as Leonard C. Burch Day in 2020. Growing up in the impoverished Ute reservation near Ignacio, Burch maintained a determination and vision that carried through all of his life endeavors. After graduating from Ute Vocational School in 1954, he served four tours of duty with the U.S. Air Force in Turkey. In 1959, Burch returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Irene. Administration Community Culture Health Tribal Members Uncategorized Veterans Southern Ute Department of Energy partners with the Colorado Energy & Carbon Managment Commission to plug and reclaim orphaned well October 22, 2024 by abarry Notice of Reclamation Activities The Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission (ECMC) is working with the Tribe’s Department of Energy (DOE) to plug and reclaim an orphaned well located on Tribal lands, southwest of Red Mesa Colorado (see attached map for details). The project will involve the use of heavy equipment and large trucks, along with a heavy-duty helicopter to transport equipment to the site. The project is slated to begin in late October or early November 2024, and will run approximately two to four weeks, weather permitting. For safety reasons, DOE is recommending this area be avoided during the proposed timeframe. This work could negatively impact hunting in the area.
