February is American Heart Month. Shining Mountain Health and Wellness will be providing weekly information to help you keep your heart healthy. Wear Red tomorrow February 2nd to bring greater attention to heart disease as the leading cause of death for Americans. American Indians/Alaskan Natives are at a higher risk for heart disease due to the increased rates of diabetes and hypertension, and deaths from heart disease often occur at a younger age. The Cultural Preservation Department, in collaboration with other Departments, is pleased to announce a book club for Tribal youth 4-12 years of age. Join us at 1:00pm on Friday, February 2, 2024, in the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum Library where we will be providing copies of You Hold Me Up by Monique Gray Smith (Cree). The Division of Social Services is offering Positive Indian Parenting class in March 2024 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 3pm. This class is free and open to all. It does require an email address, a smart device and a solid internet connection for the three-hour class. We invite you to participate. This class, Fatherhood/Motherhood is Sacred class is geared towards Parents and/or family members in the community that would like to engage in a class that discusses cultural preservation while re-vitalizing the sacred roles of Fatherhood and Motherhood. NAFFA or Native American Fatherhood and Families Association along with Founder and President Albert M. Pooley (Hopi/Navajo) has designed this class to emphasize that families are the heart of all cultures. "Our method is to uplift, encourage, assist, and teach. Fulfilling life with hope, gratitude, and understanding has a powerful effect in changing attitudes and behavior. There is no better way.
