FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT: BIA Fire Management – 970.563.4571 Summer Begay, PIO – 970.553.0052 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 16, 2025 Ute 63 Fire Southern Ute Indian Reservation – The lightning-caused Ute 63 Fire was discovered on the afternoon of July 13, 2025 near Morgan Canyon on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation. Despite a quick response from Ute Mountain Ute BIA Agency and Southern Ute BIA Agency firefighters, the fire continued to grow through the night of the 13th. On July 14, 2025 the Durango Interagency Type 3 Team (IMT3) was ordered to provide oversight and additional resources to the Ute 63 Fire. The Durango Interagency IMT3 is utilizing airtankers, helicopters, 1 dozer, and approximately 96 firefighters to suppress the Ute 63 Fire. Assisting agencies include Los Pinos Fire, Fort Lewis Mesa Fire, Durango Fire, Upper Pine Fire, San Juan County NM Fire, US Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. As of 11:30 a.m. on July 16, 2025, the Ute 63 Fire has been mapped at approximately 108 acres and is 25% contained. The Southern Ute Shining Mountain Health and Wellness is celebrating National Nutrition Month with a food tasting event. Come join us! Thursday, March 20th from 2-4pm at the LCB Building in the Hall of Warriors.
Tribal Members involved in agriculture, whether currently assigned, interested in future assignments, or designated as beneficiaries, are invited to a gathering hosted by Treasurer James “Mike” Olguin and Tribal Council. This will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Multi-Purpose Facility in the Large Room. A lunch will be provided and prepared by Treasurer Olguin. Discussion topics will include: Formation of an Experienced Farmer Work Group: Gauge interest in establishing a collaborative work group of experienced farmers to guide and support new Tribal farmers. Comprehensive Agricultural Land Management Plan: Discussion on the Agricultural Land Management Plan, its goals and objectives. Producer Needs and System Improvement: Openly addressing the needs of agricultural producers, exploring new ideas, and providing a platform for constructive feedback on current systems. In March, there will be another tribal wills clinic in the Farmington area at the Nenahnezad Chapter House. The clinic will take place March 24-28, 2025. The Tribal Wills Clinic is a group of volunteers including law students and licensed attorneys, who donate their time to help Tribal Members write wills.
